First Youth Peace Symposium.

Went to Expo Hall 4 today for the first ever Youth Peace Symposium organised by SSA.
Quite proud to be a Soka member honestly.

It was a really interesting and meaningful event. Especially to hear from representatives from different religions, Baha’i, Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholic and Sikhism (I enjoyed the speech by the Sikh representative the most). I thought this was a very good event for youths to learn more about the different religious beliefs and all in a more relaxed kind of way.

Saw Benjamin Hum, Wei Fen, Shini, Chui Ling and Kiwi. Had dinner with my sis and Yun Fong after that at Pasir Ris and walked around White Sands a bit.

Channel News Asia was there too: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/335354/1/.html

*Update: MP George Yeo who was the VIP there, blogged about it too: http://ephraim.blogspot.com/2008/03/youth-for-peace-interfaith-symposium.html

An evening of music

Concert’s over.

I’m feeling physically tired now, partly because of the concert and partly because of the fact that I carried 2 laptops to work today!! 🙁 🙁

Memorable bits:

  • Percussion “mass dance” lol
  • Dr. Ho dancing.
  • Mr Wu’s baton flying away in the midst of our performance
  • The pre-performance chat with Kiwi.
  • The pre-performance slacking with Kat.
  • The during-rehearsal phone call from Uncle Jack!!
  • The during-rehearsal SMS from Chui Ling 🙂
  • My parents at the concert
  • Faith, Hui Yi, Liyin and etc coming
  • The fact that Huzaen was at the concert
  • Vanessa, Kenneth, Nikee, Shazwan, Eng Soon, Shao Xiong, Shirley, Shirley’s mum & Elling coming to the concert
  • Radetzky March encore lol

Though I was kinda disappointed with my performance. It wasn’t up to my standard. Especially the timpani parts. I promise I won’t disappear next time (whether for exams or whatnot) without sorting out the parts first. This was one mistake I made. To have only one month before the concert with new parts isn’t fun at all. But oh well, the concert’s over, no use thinking about it and feeling sad. What matters is learning from the mistakes we made. 🙂

Code XtremeApps Prize Presentation

Woke up early this morning to attend Code Xtreme Apps Prize Presentation. I didn’t plan to go for it coz I didn’t feel like watching others receive their awards on stage (yea, I’m not a good sport at times =X That’s why I don’t go for speech days unless it’s because I’m receiving an award) and listening to talks (ok was joking about the former part of the sentence. lol). But Mr Gary Lim (henceforth known as Gary) sent us an email telling us that Melissa‘s team, BAM2 will be there to receive a Merit award for their work on the prize presentation day so I decided to go and cheer for them, plus see what the winning team offered. I’d missed the RSVP date, but as Gary had reserved seats for all of us from NYP, I was able to register my name in at the last minute.

Met Hwa Swee, Olive, Edison, Scott, Ken, Karen, Chuan Lim and some people who I recognise by face in school on the way there. Yi Long and his uncle (who’d fetched him there) was there already by the time we reached.

They had the prize presentation first (Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan was the VIP) and then the seminar. The seminar wasn’t bad except that it wasn’t of my forte so I had no idea what was going on. =X And then a tea break where we had some food.

The prize winners (2 teams won 3rd prize but one team was unable to attend) showcased their work during the tea break. Honestly, I have to say what they’d done was quite good given the time limit of 24 hours. I don’t think I shall comment much about the applications (lest readers might think I’m jealous or something 😛 ), but congratulations to all the winning teams! 🙂

Went for lunch with everyone else and Gary at Ramen Ten. Had Oyaku Chicken Noodles. Not that bad. Enjoyed the soup and the handmade noodles, but I think I like Ajisen’s noodles better.

Code XtremeApps competition.

I reached Dhoby Ghaut at 9.05am because Teck Hwee said to meet the day before at 9.15am. As expected, I was the earliest, and Hwa Swee arrived about 10 minutes later.

We went to Starbucks and got a drink (Vanilla Latte for me), sat there and talked about what’s going to happen next semester in school. :S Yan Qin, Yi Long, Tom, Vijay, Harish and Teck Hwee arrived and we all walked to SMU SIS building.

Met Li ying outside the building. She forgot her laptop adapter and we waited till about 10.30am before heading up to register for the Code Xtreme Apps competition.

Upon receiving our package, we immediately took everything out and looked through it. The theme of the competition was similar to what we’d guessed it would be, and hence went on to discuss what we could do with the theme. We also realised that our group’s room number was invalid and went on to clarify with the NUS professor what it should be. Haha.

The competition started right after lunch. LY, YL and I realised that we were sitting in front of Vijay’s team until they got reallocated to another room. THEN, about 30 minutes into the competition, the “helper” told us to move to another room. -_-” We’d already settled down into our places and started coding already! Was super annoyed and irritated by that, but nevermind. At least the seats we were allocated to in the other room was more spacious. And the room we were allocated to was the same as Vijay’s team and Nicole’s team. 🙂

Encountered loads of problems thoughout the competition as YL and I haven’t coded in Java for almost half a year (and what we’d coded 6 months ago were mapplets). So poor LY had to help us. I tried not to build onto her stress level by looking at the Java and Google GWT APIs. One of the functions that I was supposed to do couldn’t work out in the end and ended up working on another function.

Time flew by very quickly. By the time of submission, even though we weren’t able to complete all our functions, at least the important ones were done. We encountered deployment problems. I’m guessing the reason for it would most likely be the fact that the project wasn’t created properly at the beginning. >.< Oh well. Luckily for us, the organisers allowed us to submit our files in a normal folder. 🙂 We were the last team to get judged. Comments from the judges were that what we did was interactive and different from others. They tried to get us to "sell" our project, but due to the lack of sleep, we failed that part. Lol. But was quite alright in the end. So well, the weekend was fruitful as I got to learn a lot more about Google WTK as compared to the stuff that I'd read up at home about it. Learnt a lot about using Eclipse as well (though I still am not used to using it). Though I felt that perhaps this competition should be divided into categories. Even though Ruby on Rails, Google Maps, Google Mashup and GWT are new technology, there are many professionals or people out there who are already well-versed at it. A lot of us are newbies to these technology and we would definitely not win or cannot even compare to their standard in a competition like this. Even though the organisers emphasized that it is the idea that is important in this competition, it is afterall a programming competition. Maybe by having different categories in this competition, the top few of each category could have a second round of judging and the best would be able to win the Google trip or something? Just my 2 cents worth on this. 🙂

roomsDB.net: rent-a-room & bloggers, earn $

UPDATE: This campaign is now opened till 15 OCTOBER! So do a review on roomsDB.net now to earn $$! 🙂

And roomsDB.net now has a new feature created using Google Mashup! Just like what I’ve been learning recently for the competition. Check it out here: http://roomsdb.wordpress.com/2007/09/08/new-google-maps-mashup-on-roomsdbnet-find-on-map/

Want to rent a room?

I was in China when I heard about this website roomsDB.net – room rental in Singapore online. Quite an interesting and innovative way of renting rooms.

All you have to do is click on the link to the website, and from there, you’ll be able to search for rooms to rent, or post your own offer. It’s that simple. Even registration isn’t needed. And all for free!

I just finished browsing the website and realised that this has made it easier for foreign students or foreigners intending to stay in Singapore for a while to look for a place. I’ve seen how Chen Lei searched for a place to move to and it is definitely not easy and quite tedious to. roomsDB.net will help her a lot.

Latest features of the site includes: Google Maps Mashup, RSS feeds, automatic price comparison, closest MRT station feature which will make comparing and decision making easier.

Oh, and The Straits Times also recently featured an interview with the founder. Read the article here.

And for bloggers, you can write a simple review (like this one) and earn money for yourself. It’s that simple. Founder, Sebastian Ang is giving away more than $1500 for bloggers writing reviews about roomDB.net. Read all about it here. The dateline for this is 15 OCTOBER. 🙂

@ Grandma’s place.

Woke up rather early and went to visit my maternal Grandma with mum and sis.

Glad to see so many of my relatives there after not seeing them for so long. Haha I can say some of my relatives looked thinner and some look fatter. =X Grandma looked much older than the last time I saw her.

A lot of my relatives were like, “Oh! You’re back!” Haha. 🙂 I didn’t bring photos there. Argh. I want to print them and bring them there coz I have no idea how to bring digital photos without my laptop? And not sure if I plug the photos to the tv and hog it, it’ll be very nice. haha

As usual, ate a lot there. Haha. i wonder why i didn’t grow fat in the past when I used to visit her place every sunday. It’s like food galore most of the times: prawns, duck, curry, meat, vegetables, soup, etc. But I miss all these food so it was good. Probably will have to exercise those calories away, but it was worth it, to be with family again. 🙂

3rd day in SG (after 4 months in Chengdu)

Watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with Huzz today. 🙂

Overall, I felt the movie was over dramatised. They cut out a lot of stuff but I’m glad that many of my favourite quotes were in there. Like the one where Hermione described Ron as having “emotions the size of a teaspoon”. David Yates wasn’t bad in directing this film. It captured some stuff perfectly. However, 2.5 hours is kind of squeezy for Book 5 eh?

4 months and Plaza Singapura changed so much! Level B2 changed a lot. I got quite blur when I first stepped in. Lol.

And Carrefour. It feels weird when you walk in and don’t see a lot of people around waiting to introduce products to you or people shopping around. 4 months ago, I wasn’t sure what brand of drinks or cup noodles were sold in SG. Now, I know what brands are available in Chengdu. Weird comparison, but yeah.

Found a few brands of cup noodles that I’d ate in Chengdu in Carrefour here. And walnut flavour of Monmilk!!! 😀 😀 Haha! Bought one big packet of it. Used to drink it over in Chengdu. Hope it tastes the same since it’s imported from China. 🙂

Ahh. I miss the stuff that happened in Chengdu.

4 months in a year, you can’t forget it just like that.

Back in Singapore! :D

I’m Back!!! 😀 😀 Anyone missed me? 😛

Alright. Couldn’t fall asleep yesterday until around 4am. Not used to my soft soft bed and the humid weather. Quite sad eh? Living in a foreign country for 4 months made me a different person who is used to different things. :-/

My parents said I’m fat and have lots of pimples. And my Dad asked why is my face pinkish like it was sunburnt? Lol.

125th Day – Drama continued. A bit disappointed, and quite tired after that.

The flight was delayed for 50 minutes, but still reached SG rather early around 9.41pm instead of the scheduled 9.10pm. Bought Martell Cordon Bleu for my dad. Quite not used to hearing to people speak Singlish or with a Singaporean accent. Lol.

I was quite used to Chengdu life as I found out in the airport toilet. After using tissue paper in the toilet, I was looking for a dustbin. LOL! In Chengdu, other that your own waste material, you are not able to flush other stuff down the toilet. Haha.

Glad to be home! 😀

My last night in Chengdu.

So… it’s finally time to return to SG after spending 124 days over here in Chengdu.

How do I feel after living in a foreign country for 4 months? First and foremost, I feel excited that I finally get to return to my homeland Singapore. Main reason would be that I miss my family and friends a lot. I miss living in Singapore. In fact, after being here for 4 months, I kinda forgot how I used to live my life in SG. Quite sad, but yeah.

I also finally understood what Mr Lee, my sec school band teacher-in-charge told me that working for or living in a foreign country won’t be as good as working in your own country itself. Discrimination is quite common here though there are nice people who treats you better after knowing that you are from Singapore. Being foreigners, many locals here like to point their fingers at us whenever they get the chance to. Like at that trip to Jiu Zhai Gou, at this stop where we were allowed to shop for stuff. There were this whole group of Chinese who were very late and I overheard the other group of tourists in the bus saying “It’s the Singaporeans” when we were already on the bus. And over here at these apartments, people have said that “the Singaporean students climbed walls to other people’s rooftop to play” when we didn’t.

It is apparent that as Singaporeans, we are not really Chinese Chinese. This is one important thing I’d learnt. Of course, I’m not saying that everyone treats us this way, but just some of them. I think this is how many Chinese over here in Singapore feels too. :-/

Not only that, I learnt a valuable lesson of not getting controlled by the temper others want you to have. Else you might lose yourself.

Living with 12 other people also taught me some life lessons. Plus some experiences that I would never have gained if I’d never came. It’s very similar to reality TV in a way that many drama stuff had happened.

One day, all of these will soon be a mere memory. I don’t know what will be remembered from this. Probably just the simple fact that we’d once lived in Chengdu for 4 months with 12 other people. Only time will tell.

Looking at my packed luggage, I can’t believe that 4 months of my things are packed inside it. Just a mere 20kg of things…

And the memories left behind, I wished it can be kept inside somewhere.

Like a pensive perhaps. =)

Will definitely miss this place, and the people.

Must learn to let go. 🙂

P/S: Oh yea, it isn’t really such a big deal living overseas with your friends. It has been an interesting experience. I wouldn’t mind doing it again, provided I get to choose the people to live with. haha. =X 😛
