Ways to save the environment – Reducing, Reusing and Recycling at HOME

I have always been someone who’s always striving not to waste things or throw items away unless it really is of no use to me anymore. My mum calls me a karang guni (Rag-and-bone) woman, so nowadays I would make sure that I don’t buy things that I would have no use for in future. Why buy new things and use them once and then throw them away? The amount of money and time spent to make an item just to use them only once, to me is way stupid. I know factories can create jobs for others, but this is just not good for the environment.

According to NEA Singapore’s website, “In 2008, Singapore produced 2.63 million tonnes of incinerable solid waste, which is enough to fill 890 football fields to the height of an average person!”

I’m not sure about you, but I feel that we are generating way too much waste.

I believe that everyone has the power to do a part to the environment and I am going to start by writing this entry, and hopefully more people will take note of the activities that we can do to help reduce waste and to help do your part to save the environment. Some of these activities even allows you to help others! And think about it, we all live on this earth so why not help make this earth sustainable for everyone (which includes yourself).

Note that this list is non-exhaustive and for Singapore only. Feel free to comment if you have more to share!

I decided to split this article into 3 parts – Home, at NUS and at work! Stay tuned for the next 2 parts!

At home
Paper: Reuse paper that you have so that both sides are used instead of only one side. My sister and I would once in a while sort out paper/documents (non-confidential ones of course) which are only used on one side, and keep them near where the printer is. Instead of using new printing paper when we print, we would first use these used paper first.

Not only does this save the environment, it helps save money too!

Newspapers: There are so many ways to reuse or recycle newspapers but I notice that most people would just throw newspapers away into bins without reusing them.

eHow.com gives some really good ideas on how to reuse newspapers!

Some of them are:
1. Using old newspapers to clean windows/glass.
2. Using them to pack materials (like glass).

One other way that my family and I do is that we use old newspapers to absorb water in wet shoes and for us to put food waste (e.g. peeled prawn shells, peanut shells, etc). I recently watched this program on TV which teaches us that we can use newspapers to line cupboards to absorb moisture and make cupboards less damp.

Recycling points are also now very common in neighbourhoods in Singapore and just bring your newspapers there to recycle! Here’s a list (in PDF) provided by NEA where you can send your old newspapers to.

Envelopes: Reuse them! How do you reuse envelopes you might ask. Well, what my mum does (we pass all used/opened letter envelopes to her) is that she would write her shopping list or to-do list on these envelopes instead of using new note pads or paper for these lists.

Another way my mum reuses them is by placing my sister’s and my monthly allowance into the envelope and then handing us the money at the beginning of each month.

Printer ink: I just found out about this a few months back at NUS – printer ink cartridges can be recycled! (look at the list in the NUS post that’s coming soon!)

I did some Googling and found out that there are some organisations in Singapore that collects and recycles printing cartridges (and other computer equipments as well). NEA has compiled a list that can be viewed here: (including a list of recycling collection centres and bins) http://www.nea.gov.sg/cms/rcd/locations/map.html

Plastic/Paper Bags: Not sure if everyone does this, but reusing plastic/paper bags has been something that I’ve learnt since I was young. Whenever my Mum buys groceries, my sister and I would help by taking out the groceries and keeping the plastic bags somewhere.

We used to keep them in a really big plastic bag, but after we visited my uncle’s new place, we realised that there’s this thing from IKEA called the plastic bag dispenser. (Not advertising for them)

How do you reuse them? I can think of so many! To line your trash bin, to put lunch boxes in (in case the food leaks), to carry groceries, to put your wet umbrella/poncho, etc.

Paper bags are also good for carrying stuff when you go out. I’d also once read an article that teaches you how to use paper bags to wrap gifts for your friends. Most paper bags come in really nice designs too!

Of course, now they have what you call recycling bags that you can use. Do use them in order to reduce production of plastic bags and save the earth!

I’m sure you would be able to think of new ways to reduce, reuse or recycle these items and more! Feel free to share it here in the comments!

HS 10th Anniversary 101010

I performed Takarajima with the HS Band (along with alumni) on the 10th October 2010 (101010). It was quite an experience, and as many of you had read previously, quite a lot of things happened that wasn’t to my liking.

I was really quite stressed on that day owing to my projects in school, Gakkai meetings, and all. Managed to bring some work to do during breaks in between.

I have to say that I have forgotten how noisy secondary school kids are (haha!) In between performances, they were playing games that I haven’t played since primary school (no kidding). I think my secondary school life was pretty serious unlike theirs.

Unfortunately for me, I was unable to meet teachers who’d came back for the dinner. ๐Ÿ™

The ‘scariest’ part of the day was at the end of the finale when all the secondary school kids started dashing towards the helium balloons and started grabbing them (all the time screaming -.-). Nuts… Haha but I miss seeing such havoc stuff happening around me (they wanted to play with the helium by the way). I think I grew up too early. lol.

Anyway, here’s a picture of the alumni (with Mr Roger Lee) who performed that day!

The National Art Gallery Open House (Launch + First Day)

Was invited to The National Art Gallery Open House Launch by Omy on the 8th October 2010. We were allowed to bring guests and I brought my mum and Henry. “Odd”, you might think, but I know my mum likes places like this, and I also felt like asking my buddy along (someone with photography skills and I thought it should be fun).

There was the launch, and some speeches, and then a shoot with all the VIPs outside the City Hall. I took pics instead.

Spot the VIPS

Henry taught me panning! Which I’ve never tried before and this is my first shot

Willy Foo (in brown)

Next panning shot!

We had a tour around the former supreme court (which was only available on the launch day). Tour guide was Kevin who really knows his stuff.
What I didn’t like was the other staff rushing us around to the next destination. ๐Ÿ™ The whole tour was like over in 30mins which is really short if you count the number of places we entered (quite a lot).

But I learnt a lot.

Took lots of shots.

I wonder what’s this for

This leads to the cells for prisoners downstairs… They didn’t show us there ๐Ÿ™

They didn’t have aircons then so had to use these for ventilation.

Dreamy…

Inside the library

This is Kevin.

Risked my 90’s life to take this. HAHA.

Anyway, after that, my mum went home and Henry and I went to MOS Burger to sit for a while, and walked around Clarke Quay to take pics. But it was quite a hazy day so the pics didn’t turn out good (see FB for them). Then at night we went to Yi Long‘s Granny’s wake with Bao Hui.

Anyway, the next day, we met up with Henry’s group of friends to visit City Hall! Jmin was supposed to come along but after all the confusion (we weren’t sure if City Hall was open to public on that day), she decided not to go. So I went ahead as I know that dark times are ahead (with regards to projects haha).

Got to try Henry’s 50mm f1.8! Yay! ๐Ÿ˜€

The day was clearer by the way!

\
Mirrors… cannot resist.

LOOK AT THE APERTURE!

I like this concept. Will be submitting a picture soon.

Henry

His friend Jun Hong.

Had great fun! Though I have to admit I was quite tired on the 9th so I left early. Had to complete my programming part of the project too.

Thanks Omy for the invite and thanks to Henry and my mum and Henry’s friends for talking to me! Haha.

My Story: Fifty Cents Shirt

So this “Fifty Cents” shirt has been with me for quite a while. At least 5 years. I got it from This Fashion wayy back then. I liked the colour but it was quite fitting for me then so I seldom wore it. It was only after I entered poly that I started wearing it more frequently.

Because of the word “Fifty Cents” on it, people often come up with jokes when they see me wearing it that I got it for 50 cents (I didn’t) or that perhaps I cost 50 cents (don’t get the 2nd joke though). I think the words were there because of the rapper “50 Cent”, who was very popular when I got that shirt back then.

I brought this shirt with me when I went to Chengdu as the material’s pretty thick and it was rather cold then when I went over. Kept me warm in Jiuzhaigou and Er Mei Shan. ๐Ÿ™‚

As most of you who know me knows, I gained quite a lot of weight when I went to Chengdu and when I came back, that shirt was pretty tight and small for me. Wearing it would make my tummy bulge out (eeks).

I didn’t wear that shirt for quite some time.

It was only recently that I took out the shirt and started wearing it.

Quite amazed by how big that shirt is to me now. It just showed how much weight I’ve lost to be able to fit in properly now.

Looking back, it was hard work losing the unhealthy weight (I’m in the acceptable range now) and this shirt was here to prove that I did.

Got to continue to keep myself healthy.

Medium – Rare

About an hour ago, I went to MegaBites at NUS to satisfy my meat craving for these 2 weeks (thankfully the food lecture did not have anything about unethical cooking of beef), and I ordered “medium-rare” black pepper beef steak.

To my surprise, the uncle behind the counter said, “There is no medium rare. It’s medium or rare. Do you want medium or rare steak?” He then gave me a lecture on how medium steak is cooked for 5 minutes and rare steak for 3 minutes as well as well-done (7 minutes). I was amused but didn’t want to quarrel with him coz he looked pretty fierce.

I was totally amused mainly because I always order “medium rare” steak at restaurants and no one asked me to choose either one. I wondered if the uncle thought I was challenging him? And the other staff behind pretended that he wasn’t saying anything. -.-“‘

I hope this isn’t how the uncle behaves.

I got pretty confused after that, and FB messaged Huzz to check that I’m correct (he said I was).

But anyway, for the reference of others:
(taken from Wiki)

* Raw โ€” Uncooked. Used in dishes like steak tartare, Carpaccio, gored gored, tiger meat and kitfo.
* Seared, Blue rare or very rare โ€” Cooked very quickly; the outside is seared, but the inside is usually cool and barely cooked. The steak will be red on the inside and barely warmed. Sometimes asked for as “blood rare” or “bloody as hell”. In the United States, this is also sometimes referred to as ‘Black and Blue’ or ‘Pittsburgh Rare’. It is common for chefs to place the steak in an oven to warm the inside of the steak. This method generally means ‘blue’ steaks take longer to cook than any other degrees.

* Rare โ€” (52 ยฐC [125 ยฐF] core temperature) The outside is gray-brown, and the middle of the steak is red and slightly warm.
* Medium rare โ€” (55 ยฐC [130 ยฐF] core temperature) The steak will have a fully red, warm center. This is the standard degree of cooking at most steakhouses, unless specified otherwise.
* Medium โ€” (60 ยฐC [140 ยฐF] core temperature) The middle of the steak is hot and red with pink surrounding the center. The outside is gray-brown.
* Medium well done โ€” (65 ยฐC [150 ยฐF] core temperature) The meat is light pink surrounding the center.
* Well done โ€” (71 ยฐC [160 ยฐF] and above core temperature) The meat is gray-brown throughout and slightly charred.
* Overcook โ€” (much more than 71 ยฐC [160 ยฐF] core temperature) The meat is dark throughout and slightly bitter.

Out.

[Omy.sg Preview] Charlie St. Cloud – Zac Efron’s amazing performance

Synopsis: Based on an acclaimed novel, Charlie St. Cloud is a romantic drama starring Zac Efron as a young man who survives an accident that lets him see the world in a
unique way. In this emotionally charged story, he begins a romantic journey in which he embraces the dark realities of the past while discovering the transformative power of love.

Accomplished sailor Charlie St. Cloud (Efron) has the adoration of mother Claire (Oscarยฎ winner Kim Basinger) and little brother Sam (newcomer Charlie Tahan), as well as a college scholarship that will lead him far from his sleepy Pacific Northwest hometown. But his bright future is cut short when a tragedy strikes and takes his dreams with it.

After his high-school classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) returns home unexpectedly, Charlie grows torn between honoring a promise he made four years earlier and moving forward with newfound love. And as he finds the courage to let go of the past for good, Charlie discovers the soul most worth saving is his own.

Here’s the trailer:

Thanks to Omy.sg (Janet), I got a chance to watch a preview of Charlie St. Cloud on wednesday (29 September) at Iluma with my Mum!

To be perfectly honest, I only wanted to watch this movie because of Zac Efron.

However, after watching it, I found the storyline quite interesting because it dealt with supernatural aspects (I love Ghost Whisperer by the way) and yet teaches some values.

I discussed a bit of the storyline with my classmates before I watched the movie, and asked them this question: If you were Charlie, would you choose Tess or Sam (brother)?

And the most interesting thing that Jacinta asked was, “Is this a Korean movie?” And then she told me that in Korea, they emphasize a lot on family relationships and the ending would have made Charlie choose his brother instead of Tess.

Joanne mentioned that if it were her, she would definitely choose Tess, as Tess is still alive (or there is a chance that she is) whereas Sam had already died. Holding on to Sam’s ghost would make it worst in time to come.

I agree with Joanne’s point of view. In life, there would definitely be death and we would have to move on some day. I’m not saying that we should let go of our memories of the close one who had died, but it is one thing to – like Charlie in the movie – sort of die with the person but another to remember that person but move on after grieving enough – like at the end of the movie. ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, Zac Efron shines throughout this whole movie. There were a few scenes where it was just him only and you will really want to cry with him. The girl who plays Tess, Amanda Crew, is also convincing as a sailor and the chemistry between her and Zac Efron is pretty good.

There was also a scene in the movie where almost the whole cinema was like squealing. Haha You’ll have to watch it to know which scene ๐Ÿ˜‰

I won’t tell you what happens in the end, but the movie is a definite MUST WATCH.

I rate it 4/5 stars.

[Blog Contest] Post Cereal Trail Mix Crunch!

I was wondering at first glance what a “Trail Mix” was.

From Wiki: “Trail mix is a combination of dried fruit, grains, nuts, and sometimes chocolate, developed as a snack food to be taken along on outdoor hikes.

Trail mix is considered an ideal snack food for hikes, because it is tasty, lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious, providing a quick boost from the carbohydrates in the dried fruit and/or granola, and sustained energy from the mono- and polyunsaturated fats in nuts.”

Ahh! I see!

Did you know? Post Cereal has Trail Mix Crunch too! It comes in 2 flavours, Cranberry Vanilla and Raisin and Almond. Here’s a picture of the Cranberry Vanilla box!

Anyway, I believe in these days, people eat Trail Mix Crunch for breakfast to have a good source of energy to start their day right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So it is important to have a good breakfast.

Cranberry Vanilla is a pretty interesting flavour that I have never heard of previously. Cranberries have Vitamins, Minerals, Fibers and even water content which are all good for us! I personally love dried cranberries as well as vanilla. Thinking about the combination of these two things seem pretty interesting eh?

With lots of wheat, barley and almonds as well, no wonder it’s called Post Cereal Trail Mix Crunch!

Check out Post Cereal’s website: http://www.postcereals.com/cereals/trail_mix_crunch/ for more information on their Trail Mix Crunch! Also has recipes if you want to have a new method of eating your trail mix.

And I learnt what a Trail Mix is today! ๐Ÿ˜€

Hope you enjoy your Post Cereal Trail Mix Crunch!

*By the way, do check out Post Cereal SG Facebook Page for more updates and recipes too!

SOLVED: Can’t Connect to MS SQL Server 2005 (Error: 18456)

I decided to post the solution to this problem that I believe many people have encountered. After trying for 2 days, I finally found the solution to it and am just very frustrated to how simple it actually was and that it wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the setup of MSSQL.

I am using Windows Vista SP2.

If you’ve tried other methods that are posted online (e.g. Setting Advanced Settings for Windows Firewall, Enabling Pipeline and TCP/IP, etc) and it doesn’t seem to work, perhaps the following method will work:

1) Go to All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Surface Area Configuration
2) Click on Add New Administrator
3) On the left window, under your (Computer name, e.g. USER-PC) click on Member of SQL Server SysAdmin role on (Computer name)
4) Click on the > button
5) Click on OK

Try connecting to MS SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio Express using Windows Authentication and it should work now. ๐Ÿ™‚

June 2010 Projects: Cousins meetup (outside Grandma’s house)

Sooo… a few months ago, a few of us cousins discussed and decided that we should have a cousins gathering/outing outside of Grandma’s house. The main reason being, we usually meetup only at grandma’s and we don’t really communicate much. I actually have a dream that the 20+ of us could come to one outing and take a group picture. It would really mean a lot to have that photo somewhere. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be one at the moment. ๐Ÿ™

This holidays, I was supposed to visit Janning at KL, but the plan was cancelled in the end, and about a month ago, Janning emailed me to tell me that she’s coming to SG! ๐Ÿ˜€ What a surprise! So we discussed for a few nights on MSN where I could bring her to (for half a day) and she suggested we could have a mini cousins gathering. I mass FB-messaged my cousins, but not many replied unfortunately. ๐Ÿ™ We just gathered a few then, and after that set a day and place to meet.

Anyway, I got sick a few days before Janning came, but managed to recover on time. ๐Ÿ™‚

On the 19th June, Uncle Alex drove Janning over to my house to pick me up and we headed to Khatib. As Janning was hungry, we went to a coffee shop at Khatib and Janning had her lunch while I had tea.

Sooo… Here are a few of the pics I took at Bottle Tree Park (which was our first stop for the day).

There was some fishing competition and this guy caught that fish. Pretty big, but they put it back after the photo.

Next stop was Marina Barrage! Okay we went to eat at this coffee shop next to Northpoint and surprisingly the bak chor mee was pretty good! Then we went to Marina Barrage.

We chatted along the way and I got to know Janning better. Haha. We’re both cousins but even though she’s from KL, I feel I’m also not that close with cousins from SG what say KL? I’m glad I got to talk to her and know her better. ๐Ÿ™‚

It was dark when we arrived. I’d planned Marina Barrage as the “night event” because I felt that there would be more stuff there to see instead of Bottle Tree Park.

To be honest I didn’t know what I would see there, and wow! I didn’t realise that there would be soooo many people around as well as things happening!

Kite flying at night. Blur coz slow shutter speed and strong winds…

Basically, we walked around taking pictures of people and the view. It just so happened that there was NDP rehearsal and there were fireworks! But sad to say, I lack a tripod and the skills to take proper pictures of it.

UFO flying above Singapore Flyer??? ๐Ÿ˜›

Look at all the people!

Light from MBS.

Anyway, most of the shots were blurry because of the lack of tripod and slow shutter. Quite bad la. ๐Ÿ™

But it compensated for the above pic. Look closely at the fountains ๐Ÿ˜€

Janning wanted to take the fountain with coloured lights but for some reason she kept missing the chance. So since we had time, we sat there and waited for it. I decided to experiment with bokeh shots. Haha. I’m quite amused by bokeh. Pretty interesting you know? So yea here are some of the shots.

Interesting how not to focus can give you nice art too. What I see when I don’t wear my specs basically. =x

At night.

We’d wanted to go to MBS but unfortunately I was too noob to know where to go. Lol I made us alight at the wrong stop (so paiseh) and the buses there weren’t that frequent so we had to go back or it would be too late.

Janning and I on the train! ๐Ÿ˜€

So that was the first meetup with her! Remember the cousins gathering thingy, it was to be on the 21 June.

We’d asked quite a few cousins, but unfortunately by the actual day itself, it was just Janning, Me, Danny and Wei Wen. Fortunately to be honest. ๐Ÿ™‚ >1 person better than no one right?

Dinner was just Janning, Danny and I. Danny kept wanting to go to this place called “The Creation” at Shaw Centre (opposite Suntec that area) so we went!

I had pasta (can’t remember what) with chamomile tea and soup. Approximately $15. Not bad!

Wei Wen joined us after that and we took a group photo before heading to INK Club Bar.

Danny, Janning, Wei Wen and I. I know I’m the shortest

So we headed to INK! It’s a great place by the way. They had a guest trumpeter that day.

We had a drink each. Only Janning got an alcoholic drink. I was still under medication so didn’t dare. Next time perhaps! Love that place. Love the type of jazz music there. ๐Ÿ™‚

We took another group pic together!

Benny was supposed to go on that day. But he had to OT till late (poor thing), and… he arranged for another meetup with Janning on the 22nd! ๐Ÿ˜€

I brought Huzz along coz he’s almost family (hee hee) and we were supposed to be watching a movie that day. He was okay that we weren’t going for the movie anyways ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks bf!

I reached there quite late because I had to OT a bit as well as the fact that I got off the wrong stop. zzz Huzz and I went to look for Janning, then we headed to Xin Wang HK Cafe at Marina Square for dinner!

Had a good long chat (okay I was mostly observing) with Janning and Benny. Huzz was pretty entertained as well.

Group shots!

*Group pics and pics at INK are courtesy of Janning!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, it was a fufilling 3 days. I got to communicate with cousins Janning, Danny, Wei Wen and Benny. Learnt a lot about them that I didn’t know before. Basically the main reason was the age gap I feel and over the years, we just stopped talking much at Grandma’s and all. Pretty sad. But anyway, I am determined that one day, all of us cousins will be able to meetup like friends do outside of where we usually go to! In fact, I have this dream of having a photo of all of us 20+ cousins together. I will definitely print and frame it up if there comes such a day. I know that my cousins either like photography, or music or do something related to either one (e.g. singing, dancing, playing instrument, art, etc) and I belong to either one as well! I am very sure that we will all be good friends instead of only being related by blood.

Aiming for more of such outings! ๐Ÿ˜€

Despicable Me [Omy.sg Movie Review]

Remember last year when I won a pair of tickets from Shan and Rozz of 987FM to watch a movie with my sister for her birthday?

This year, I got the opportunity thanks to Omy.sg to watch Despcable Me!! And again, I brought Candy to the preview. ๐Ÿ™‚ I immediately signed up when I saw the opportunity so that I am able to bring her again!

When we arrived, The Cathay was super crowded and we realised that this is the very first preview of Despicable Me in SG! Meaning we were one of the first group of people watching it in Singapore! ๐Ÿ˜€ Haha.

There were people handing out stickers, and queuing for photos. And as you’d seen in the first image, my sis and I took one with the minions too (who are probably kids judging from their height).

I didn’t know what the movie was about actually, except that this guy (Gru) wants to be super evil so he stole some stuff like the statue of liberty (from Vegas lol) and the Times Square screen and now he wants to be the super evil person and steal the moon.

Who is it to stop him right? Right! Except this other evil guy (I shall not say who, go and watch it) and 3 little kids who managed to touch his heart. haha.

I shall not say too much to spoil it but go and watch it. You’ll laugh like mad and GO AND WATCH THE 3D VERSION! I know it may sound like I’m trying to advertise for the movie (this is after all a review) but I believe they made the movie for 3D. Especially some scenes! Shall not spoil it but the experience is just amazing.

Do sit through the credits too (with your 3D glasses). The few small scenes after that that played with the 3D technology is amazing.

I just found this app where you can translate what the minions are saying in the movie! Go download it before you watch it here: http://www.bestbuymoviemode.com/

My favourites are the minions as well as the little girl, Agnes. haha. She’s so cute!

Source: Movie Wallpaper.net

Excellent movie! I gave it 4.5/5 stars because of the humour, fun, great 3D effects and some surprising stuff that happens in it. Lol.

Oh and the soundtrack’s mostly done by Pharrell Williams, who is a popular artiste and worked with people like Justin Timberlake before.

Thank you Omy.sg for the movie! ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyway, Candy was sick before the movie so we couldn’t go for a good dinner! ๐Ÿ™ Another day then.

Leaving you with one more pic of the minion:
