Singapore food in Chengdu – Parkway!

On sunday, Madeline and Vernon came home and told us that they found a restaurant selling Singapore food at Chun Xi Road’s (春熙路) Isetan. So yesterday, one of my group’s member announced that he had a craving for Nasi Lemak and that we should go there to satisfy his craving. And so we did.

The restaurant name’s called Parkway. As in Parkway Parade that Parkway.
The first thing we saw were these life-like representations of the food outside the restaurant and were quite awed by it, coz we really missed Singapore food. There were fried rice, prawn noodles, etc.

When we walked in, we saw Lianhe Zaobao and The Straits Times newspaper. o.O The manager told us that it was brought over by someone who returned from Singapore yesterday. Haha.

Lots of Singapore food on the menu!!! Hainanese Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Prawn Noodle, Char Siew Noodles, Chicken Rendang, Fried Rice, Claypot Chicken Rice, Fried Kway Teow, etc. Haha. I didn’t have any Singapore food cravings though (except probably my Mum’s cooking) so I settled with Claypot Chicken Rice.

The Claypot Chicken Rice is quite different from the one I’m used to eating in Singapore – rice which are quite dry and can be scrapped off from the side of the pot, lots of dark sauce. This Claypot Chicken rice is very similar to their 盖浇饭 (“cover to cook” – rice with lots of gravy) . It consists of rice, with gravy, sausages, chicken, mushrooms and some vegetables. No dark sauce and all 🙁 But it was still quite delicious. The rice had a hint of pandan leaf smell. 🙂 And I’m guessing that they had to tweak the original recipe a little to suit the taste of the locals.

I also ordered Red Bean with Ice (红豆冰). Quite similar to ice-kachang, except for the kachang. They only have red beans here. Love the fact that there’s milk in the ice!! 😀 But the price is quite scary. RMB$25 (~SGD$5)

Edmund ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice and Fried Kway Teow.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Fried Kway Teow

I didn’t sample the chicken, but the rice wasn’t very much like the ones we have at hawker centres.
The kway teow was a tad too thick than usual, and the taste wasn’t as strong. And they didn’t put sausages. :-/

Twin ordered Laksa!!

Laksa

They didn’t put a lot of coconut milk unlike what we have in Singapore, so when we all first tasted the gravy, we all thought that there wasn’t coconut milk in it. Until twin stirred the gravy and saw that it actually has coconut milk. And it isn’t as spicy as what we get in Singapore. Maybe it’s coz I’m used to eating chilli over here.

Hwa Swee ordered dunno-what steak and Prawn Noodle.

Steak

Prawn Noodle

The prawn noodle was heavenly!!! haha! As in the soup. It really tasted like what I would eat at my grandma’s house during the weekends when my aunt cooks it. 😀 😀 😀

Jia Hui ordered Singapore Fried Rice and something like a mango pudding.

Singapore fried rice

Mango pudding

The mango thing was not bad. But a little sweet.

Henry ordered Indonesian Fried Rice.

Indonesian Fried Rice

It looks quite good. Looks spicy but it didn’t taste as spicy.

Oh and the person didn’t satisfy his craving for Nasi Lemak after all. After what he ordered =X 😛

Overall, the Singapore food available there is acceptable. I won’t say it’s very good and all, but if you really really crave for Singapore food, you can visit that place.

And of course, the price is waaayyy higher than what we get in Singapore.

July 2

It is my 83rd day here in Chengdu, 42 days left before I return to Singapore. How do I feel? Quite excited actually to be able to see my home again. To see my family and friends. 🙂 There are tasks waiting for me to complete; goals waiting for me to be reached.

When I left Singapore 83 days ago, I left a lot of stuff behind, whether it’s tasks or my daily routine, stuff that I once thought I couldn’t live without. But hey, now that I am here on the 2nd of July, I realised that all these can be changed if you’re flexible about life. At least I left Singapore because I choose to. 🙂

In the cab this morning, I suddenly realised that Chengdu actually isn’t that bad afterall, if you have the money and a proper place to live in over here. Of course, not for long but probably for a holiday or something. There are lots of eateries, places to shop and tourist attractions. The sad thing about this attachment is that we don’t have much time to explore the places around here, and that we really are not too familiar with this place.

Bought Maksim’s Variations Part I & II Special Edition yesterday. The piano score for Olympic Dream was included inside. Just looking at the piano score made me excited and yet sad, coz I miss playing music. And the scary thing was the realisation that my sight reading skills have gone back to the lowest level. 🙁

Also played badminton yesterday. Haven’t played in 2 weeks and it was quite tiring for me, but nevertheless, fun to run around and sweat. 🙂

Edited (4.54pm): Bohemian Rhapsody in Maksim’s album rocks!! 😛

81st day here.

It’s currently 1.48am. I’m sitting here on the floor in the living room where 2 guys are sleeping on the sofas. I am the last one awake!!

Well, just updated my WordPress software and changed my theme. The previous theme looks weird with the ads being squeezed to the side like that. This one looks better. I like how the links to the pages are posted on top rather than the side of the page.
Unfortunately, my Chinese characters all come out in symbols. Argh!!!

Yesterday 2 days ago was Vernon Lek‘s birthday. He and Madeline ordered an ice-cream cake that some person delivered to the apartments in the rain. Quite cool to have everyone in the house to sing a birthday song together and eat cakes. It reminds me of the birthday celebrations at my Grandma’s house. 🙂 This sort of experience… you won’t get a second one.

Vernon got chased around the house with cake. The chaser made the place quite messy and not everyone was happy about it. At least he had the responsibility to clean up. Which I think is not bad.

It’ll be my turn next month. I wonder how it’ll be like.

Received news from my sis that Ishi from Soul was found dead in a car. I didn’t really watch Superband the other time, but it’s still quite shocking about such news. Especially one about a death. Read the news here(though personally, I don’t like the way that article was written).

Going to bed now. 🙂

Grandma’s Kitchen

The 13 of us were split nicely 7-6 yesterday after work for dinner. First batch and second batch. For the first time since the 9th of May, we were on our own, and they were on their own. 🙂

So, we went to Grandma’s Kitchen, this quite well-known Western restaurant in Chengdu. The prices were quite nice to look at (if you know what i mean) and we took a while to decide what to get. The waitresses could speak English, though not very well.

I ordered this sandwich called “Cheese Steak” but didn’t get to try it at all coz when Edmund‘s “Grandma’s Club Sandwich” came, everyone, including me, thought it was mine. I gave my sandwich to Edmund then.

My order, but I gave it to Edmund

Edmund’s Order

Yi Long’s Order: Pork Chop with mango sauce

Henry’s Order: Ham Sandwich

Jia Hui’s Order: Fried Chicken Burger

Hwa Swee’s Order: Big prawn pasta. I was reassured when I saw his order that I was right in not ordering seafood items in Chengdu

Cod Balls – like potatoes, but with a bit of fish meat

Salad! I ate the most for this

Bread that came with butter and this delicious green sauce

On the way back, the 6 of us talked about toilets. Haha. Totally random but it was an interesting topic. 😛

——————————————————————–
Kept thinking of HS Alumni Band today. Probably coz the first rehearsal starts tomorrow and I’m unable to be there. But well, I’m thinking of ways to get alumni to return and remain. Hopefully it’ll work 🙂

2 Days trip to Le Shan (乐山) and E-Mei Shan (峨眉山)

About 3 weeks ago, some of my housemates brought up the idea of going to E-Mei Mountain (峨眉山) for one weekend. So plans were made, and we went on this trip on Saturday.

Day 1 (June 16)
Set my alarm clock at 4.50am but ended up waking up only around 5.15am. Hurriedly packed my remaining stuff into my bag and set off. We didn’t get any breakfast but reached the meeting place early. Our tour guide looked really young, like those university students, and the bus driver was quite friendly. After a few hours of travelling, we reached this crystal exhibition centre that was quite similar to the one we’d visited in Jiu Zhai Gou. The prices here were much cheaper but the cutting and the workmanship was not as good as the one at Jiu Zhai Gou. I bought something over here for my Mum. 🙂 (Shh… it’s a surprise)We finally reached Le Shan (乐山) or Le Mountain around 9.40am. Had to walk about 600m to the place. The area was quite foggy but the air was fresh. 🙂

View on the way to Le Shan

For those who don’t know, Le Shan is famous for the Grand Buddha, carved from the rocks on the mountain around 700AD. I was quite excited to be able to see the Grand Buddha because it is the biggest in the world and it would be cool to tell people that you’ve seen it.

We followed another tour guide over when we reached Le Shan; this petite lady whose surname is “Dai”. She brought us all over Le Shan. The highlight of Le Shan is the 71m tall Buddha statue made of rocks. Along the way up the mountain are small statues of dragons, people, tigers and all. She explained that it is best not to take pictures of some of the statues like one of this dragon without a body because according to their belief, it’ll bring bad luck in studies. And that dragon carving looks like it’s trapped in the wall. Another that was said to bring bad luck was one of a white tiger walking out of its cave.

Out of all the explanations, i particularly liked the one she explained about the character 佛 (fo2) or Buddha.

The petite tour guide

We climbed up the mountain to view the Grand Buddha’s head from the top, and to take pictures. There were people who would photograph you “touching” the Buddha. I wasn’t interested in it, so I didn’t pay for that. But I must say that it’s a very very beautiful sculpture.

Me. To prove to my mum that i was there.

We had to climb down these flight of stairs that were quite narrow and steep. At the foot of the Grand Buddha, tourists can buy incense to pray to the Buddha.

Had to climb all the way up again (through another route) before we could leave the place. There were paintings and words on the wall.

People repairing the paintings

Next stop was by this cave which one priest used to live in. The guide told us a story about him (which I honestly can’t remember the details except that he dug out his eyeballs) and that he used to live in the cave (which has nothing inside).

The Priest

Then we walked out of Le Shan, and saw this 13-storeyed pagoda where there are scriptures and the ashes of the priest I’d mentioned above are buried below it. The tour guide told us never to enter a 13-storeyed pagoda as it usually has some religious stuff buried under it and it would be disrespectful to enter the pagoda.

Is the pagoda straight or slanted?

The answer to that question is that the pagoda is straight, but because the ground we are standing on is slanted, that’s why we view the tower as slanted. Or as the tour guide said, “人正塔就正,人歪塔就歪。” “If you are standing straight, the pagoda would be straight. If you are standing on slanted ground, the pagoda would be slanted.”

Then we went to this Ebony Museum where we saw sulptures made from wood that were really nice I must say. Unfortunately, photography wasn’t allowed in there so I couldn’t share pictures.

However, there’s this section where there were pictures and models made from Chairman Mao badges. Quite interesting.

Took the tour bus to this bus terminal to transfer to another bus that would bring us up to E-Mei Mountain.

Inside the bus terminal

We reached the top of E-Mei Mountain by 7pm and had dinner before checking out our hotel room. Even though it’s a 2-star hotel, it is wayyyy better than the 3-star hotel at Jiu Zhai Gou.

Found a box which says “4-in-1 toothbrush” in the hotel room’s toilet.

4-in-1 toothbrush

I was curious so I emptied the contents and found these:

Riigght…

Day 2 (June 17)
Woke up at 4.15am, packed our luggage and went downstairs for breakfast. Breakfast served was fried beehoon with soup. Reminds me of the beehoon that my Mum cooks, coz of the smell and the soup. lol. But it was filling.

The tour guide rented these thick jackets for us coz it was quite cold. Then we walked quite a distance up E-Mei mountain. I was quite sick of steps after that. As it was still quite dark then, I didn’t take any pictures. It even drizzled while we were walking. Went to the cable car station and took this super big cable car (that could hold 100 people).

At the cable car station

View from cable car

Reached the top of E-Mei Shan after a while, and we climbed lots of stairs up to where this big Buddha statue is. The sun have already risen and it was very foggy at the top.

I thought the statue of the 十面佛 (10-face Buddha) was quite grand and well done. It was only unveiled last June.

Climbing up the stairs

There were 3 temples at the top as well – A gold, a silver and a bronze temple. They have some shops selling religious items there as well.

Along the mountain are railings with heavy chains with locks on it. I was quite curious and took a look at it and realised that there were different type of locks with names on it. Different type of locks have different meanings. Each lock costs RMB$39 (SGD$7.80) and I think they carve your name on it for you as well.

Heart shaped. For couples 🙂

Round. For good fortune?

I think this is also for good fortune…

Took the cable car back. won’t bore you with such details but the sky was brighter and it felt like we were floating among the clouds. And they played “Take Me To Your Heart” by MLTR in the cable car. LOL.

Took another bus. We were then “transferred” to another tour guide, this time a strict lady who told us not to take pictures on the way to destinations and only take it on the way back. The following picture sums up the places we went to and the route we took from around 8am-4pm.

What was memorable was this area where there were lots of monkeys hanging out. I didn’t take any pictures there though, coz I don’t want my camera to be snatched away.

Oh and on the way to the monkeys area, we had to cross a river, and I picked 2 stones/rocks for Mrs Lee. Didn’t have time to stop to choose though. :-/

And they honestly didn’t build the tracks properly with proper tiles and so I was the first in the group to slip and fall down like 3 steps. Haha. It was darn scary and my butt hurt =X Then Yi Long and Li Ying fell as well. It was horrible and we had to walk sideways and all to prevent ourselves from falling again. 🙁

Let the pictures do the talking:

The tour guide’s on the right

Went to another tea appreciation place and bought more tea!! 😀 I think I’ll have enough tea to last me for a year. haha

Everyone else

Because of the dramas I watched on tv, I always thought that E-Mei Shan is a mountain full of nuns and people practising martial arts all over the place. Even travel websites say that we’ll be staying in monasteries if we sleep up in the mountains. -_-” Now after visiting the place, I would say to visit E-Mei Shan in a travel group if you often visit temples. If you just want to visit E-Mei coz it’s a “must visit” place, then I would suggest that you go there on your own. 🙂

Overall, this trip is definitely better than Jiu Zhai Gou. 🙂

76th Day – Hearts!

Had Spicy Steamboat on Saturday night. This time, my throat handled it well though my stomach didn’t. I only found out about that the next day (Sunday) when I woke up with a bad stomachache. Found out that I’m not the only one.

Had lunch at this Hollywood Cafe where we went to many times. That restaurant serves Hong Kong food, which is quite similar to what we have in Singapore – Char Siew, Roasted Duck, Roasted Chicken, fried rice, fried bee hoon, hor fun, etc. I ordered that they called “Singapore Fried Noodles” and it reminded me of the bee hoon we have in SG, except that it’s drier. They fried the bee hoon with egg, green and red capsicum, char siew and tumeric powder. I sort of guessed that they called it Singapore fried noodles coz of the tumeric? Indians usually fry rice or noodles with tumeric powder I think. So… it’s like a mixture of different food of different races I think.

Went to Mr Ling’s place with everyone except Yi Long, Henry and Edmund (they went to Wal-Mart). 3 of them played Mahjong and the rest of us played Cheat and then Hearts. I learnt Hearts! But it’s quite tiring as you really have to pay attention and focus on the game. But quite a fun game.

Starting to feel homesick recently. Maybe it’s because my family don’t call me as often as they used to? I dunno. Had 2 dreams of me already being back in SG.

Plus recent events really made me feel tired mentally, even though I don’t think about what’s going on. But I guess deep down in my subconscious mind, it’s eating me. Eating my energy up at night when I sleep. I just don’t feel like thinking about anything coz I feel tired. Hm.. Does it make sense? That your subconscious mind is using up your brain energy at night when you’re sleeping and by the day when you wake up, you only feel like slacking and doing mindless activities? haha.

One of the house mates was stopped from going out to explore alone yesterday and at that point of time made me miss the freedom I have in SG. I’m not saying that those who stopped him was wrong (I’m also one of them who stopped him), but just missed the freedom.

Ah… 49 days left. I’m missing home now, but I bet I’ll miss this place and the routine when I return to SG. Humans are quite ironic. 🙂

“You don’t love a woman because she is beautiful, she is beautiful because you love her”.

Found the above quote really really beautiful from my iGoogle’s “Love Quote of The Day”.

So basically slacked the whole day today, and downloaded a few ROMs to play. Anyone knows where to get Super Mario Bros ROM? The original old school one in the Mushroom World? Oh, and 2 more people have joined me for Neopets. 🙂

Using Safari now. Really beautiful!!

Just now Huzz shared this website: http://benglish.kennysia.com/ and it was spread to almost the whole group of us. Laughed till tears flowed out of my eyes. Literally. It was that funny. 😀

Go ahead and add your blog url in. Just some warning though: the words that are “translated” might offend people and all so just take it with a pinch of salt. 🙂

Last to sleep.

After I’d posted the previous entry, I sat around the living room and asked Edmund for some website design advice. Li Ying and him gave me pointers to better design a website. 🙂 Thank you both! 🙂

Then after a while, I was the only one awake left in the whole house. And I realised that it was the first time I was the last to sleep over here in Chengdu. It also reminded me of home, coz I would almost everyday be the last to sleep. Hm… Haven’t really missed being at home until today. >.< Oh well. Camp Tetra starts today! How time flies! I remember the last camp where I went for the last 2 days (because I had school), ran around, shouted at lots of people and for the first time, felt involved as an alumni. I remember that night when all of us alumni slept in the music room (girls, guys and teachers), how that day was the first World Cup match and we attempted to watch World Cup how it was so cold I couldn’t really sleep, how I was up almost the whole night, listening to snores, how in the morning, I woke up and saw Yan Xiong sitting by the window, how I stood by the window with the other alumni watching the Tetrians do PT, how I made friends with Hui Min, how Reuben was there running around and all (his Canada school holiday), how we girls boiled herbal tea for everyone…

Hope that someone will take a nice video of the POP. 🙂

Yesterday, I realised that even though I’m kind of complaining in a way about the things happening here, come August 13, I’ll miss a lot of things.

I’ll miss living with 12 other people.
I’ll miss being annoyed at others.
I’ll miss the late nights chatting with the others.
I’ll miss living without my family.
I’ll miss joking with my friends.
I’ll miss making my own decisions.
I’ll miss spending time with Huzz.

However,
I won’t miss emptying the rubbish bins.
I won’t miss emptying the used water from under the sink.
I won’t miss slipping on the toilet floor.
I won’t miss the dusty floor (even though I sweep it almost every day).
I won’t miss the mosquitoes (killed 2 today).

Or maybe, those that I won’t miss, will be remembered fondly in my heart. Experiences! 😀

SAFARI!!! 71st day. :)

Just downloaded the Safari beta version for Windows. And I must say, I’m awed by the design!!! 😀 It looks super sleek and I feel like I’m using a Mac. 😀 😀 I’ll still stick with using Opera (my default browser) for now. If I’m taken away by the features and stuff Safari offers when they release it, I’ll probably switch to using Safari. The downside to this is that not many web pages support Safari.

Visited Mount Emei and Le Shan over the weekend. Quite an interesting experience honestly. Made me want to know more about my religion. The next entry would be about it. 🙂 Still currently writing the entry about it. 🙂

Sunday was Father’s Day and my mum called me so that I could wish my Dad a Happy Father’s Day. Still haven’t bought anything for him. I’ll probably get him a belt. That’s the only thing I can think of. So far, I think I’ve bought the most stuff for my dear sis. Lol. 😛

Still haven’t thought of what to get for the band, SNCO and all. :-/

Yesterday was Dragon Boat Festival. The company gave us each 8 Century Eggs and 2 raw rice dumplings. 😀 Already tried one of the century egg, and surprisingly, the smell of it wasn’t as strong as the ones in Singapore.

Recently also learnt a lot of Mandarin and about China from 2 of my colleagues (who I’m teaching English to). Quite interesting lah. Except that sometimes I have no idea how to express myself in Mandarin, which is kind of sad.

Anyway, I’m still up so late coz I just put my laundry into the washing machine about 20mins ago, and must wait for it to finish washing. 🙂

The more time I spend with you, the more I just want to hold on to you and never let go. 🙂

Watched Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End yesterday with Huzz, Jia Hui, Mike, Yi Long, Henry, Hwa Swee and Edmund at this place called Fortune Mall. We went to the wrong place coz the driver wasn’t too sure where the place was. Just wished that the instructions were clearer. :-/ But that place is quite nice. 🙂 Walked around before watching Pirates at around 9. Not a bad place honestly. Quite similar to SG’s. And oh, I saw a small ad thingy on “I Not Stupid”, except that the name is different. Quite interesting lah.

POTC3… A bit disappointing coz they kept cutting bits of it. >.< We were eagerly awaiting for Chow Yun Fat’s character Sao Feng to say “Welcome to Singapore” but they cut it off!!!! 🙁 Sad ah. And his character like died within 20 mins? A bit weird. It made his character a bit redundant. Lol. Maybe coz I was tired, but I liked POTC2 better. Though I’ll still get the DVD/VCD in SG when I return. 🙂 The bonus scene after the credits was a bit erm, interesting. =X But quite sad though. Will and Elizabeth can only meet each other once every 10 years. 🙁

Reached home at 12+ am.

Haagen Dazs tonight! 😀
峨眉山 (E-Mei Shan) and 乐山 (Le Shan) tomorrow and sunday. Hope it’ll be fun. Hope that I won’t fall asleep during the trip. :-/
