SD Kenshu 2010 (30-31 Jan).

NUSSD on the 2nd day of kenshu

Meant to blog this last week but I was just too busy! Life has been interesting lately.

Kenshu, or ็ ”ไฟฎ basically means training in Bahasa Japanese (hahaha). Every year I believe SD has a kenshu for all members and friends to participate and learn.

So this year, I agreed to go for kenshu but didn’t take the exam. Basically, throughout the lessons, I was OT-ing. I went for the first lesson (learnt about SSA’s SD history for that one) and the subsequent ones I couldn’t make it.

So on the morning of the first day, I was feeling a little freaked out as I didn’t really know what to bring and pack. After packing, I realised that I had to bring a lot of stuff and was wondering why (it was a 2D 1N thing). Haha.

Then, on my way there, my shirt had this string that decided to unroll from nowhere. I had to break the string using my hands on the train and it looked pretty awful. All these bad demons attacking me huh?

By the time I reached CCK LRT (the kenshu was at Senja Soka Centre) I was freaking out, wondering if my outfit was ok as they said we have to wear at least 3/4 pants. I was wearing a pants that reached my knees.

Regress a bit, I know I’m a bit paranoid but I’m scared not knowing what the 2 days was going to be like. I think I’m kinda weird in some way. Wonder if there’s a syndrome for it. If I don’t know the schedule for a meeting or stuff, I’ll just freak out. My day has to be planned out if I’m out with others. Only with family and myself then I won’t be scared.

So I reached there and was greeted by Evelyn who handed me my SD T-shirt (after I paid) and the booklet for Kenshu. Saw Wang Lee as well. Evelyn then brought me upstairs and looked for Jingsi who I knew from NYPSD. She couldn’t recognize me at first until she stared at me for 1 second. haha. She was like “I recognise you from your eyes!” ๐Ÿ˜€ I have big eyes. Lol.

We started updating on what we were doing and all, and Evelyn brought a girl, Jia Neng and joined us. Jia Neng’s major is Medicine. When she told us, we were like “Whoa!!” and she looked a bit paiseh. haha. She’s nice and end for the next 2 days I hung out with her.

I realised that there were some people whom I’d never seen in any of the NUSSD meetings (Jia Neng included) and they told me that they seldom attended. But I’m quite glad that they came for kenshu!

For the 2 days, we had sharings, study, testimonials, games and an 80 sec to fame thing.

Which reminds me. I saw Boon Han and he didn’t recognise me at all. He even asked if I’m “Candy or Jasmine”. Was totally annoyed then but not now. My sis told me, “Well done, your friend of so many years don’t recognise you.” Haha

Didn’t really sleep well at night coz it was pretty noisy and people kept walking in and out of the room. Plus, the door hinge was super squeeky and it just wake me up everytime. NUSSD was placed near the door btw. Shirley (Lam) was pretty funny. She lay down on the floor and was like “Huh!! The floor is so hard!!” then she covered her head using her sleeping bag and said “Wah my sleeping bag is smelly!!” Lol.

Had loads of fun at the morning exercise thingy at the 2nd day. There was this lady who taught us some aerobics exercise and the SD guys made lots of sound effects for it. It made the mood more fun and reminded me a lot about YCF 2001! A table where the trainers will stand on top to teach us moves, exercises, and also the mass exercises and loads of people doing the same moves, etc.

The picture above was taken after the exercise and games on the 2nd day.

Oh ya, we had Lee Wee Bros beehoon breakfast on the 2nd day!! I was super excited when I saw the van driving into Senja Soka Centre. HAHA. Love their Otah! And the chilli that came with the beehoon and otah was excellent! It wasn’t too spicy (or maybe it’s me) but it was pretty sweet and complemented the beehoon nicely! ๐Ÿ˜€

Didn’t think of taking pictures throughout the 2 days. ๐Ÿ™ So the above was taken from Qiuyi‘s facebook.

Learnt a lot throughout the camp and I just wondered why I didn’t strive as hard for SSA/SGI/Sensei before. ๐Ÿ™ Must jia you!

Pengalaman Proyek tentang Bahasa Indonesia 2

My Bahasa Indonesia 2 module officially ended today at 3.45pm with the last test of the semester. I think I did badly, but let’s hope I pass. We had our project presentation about 2 weeks ago and we had to write an essay titled “Pengalaman Proyek” (Project Experience). Here’s what I wrote (corrected by Ibu Fanny). Apologies to those who can’t understand the following…

Tulisan banyak perubahan.

Hari presentasi, teman saya Kartika ikut saya ke โ€œSeminar Roomโ€. Selama presentasi, saya nervus sekali. Untungnya, presentasi tidak ada kesalahan. Kartika berkata, โ€œSaya sangat menikmati acaranya.โ€

Sebelum presentasi, kepala saya pusing sekali.

Kartika pulang sesudah presentasi.

Saya sangat menikmati proyeknya.

Halloween Horrors: Where the dead fairytale characters reside

Was invited to The Return of Halloween Horrors at Night Safari last night! ๐Ÿ˜€

Invited Charmelon (aka Charlene) along coz I haven’t seen her in quite a while ๐Ÿ™‚

The last time I went to Night Safari was 6 years ago during my first band camp (combined with SKSS). I don’t remember what happened that night except something that happened near the end of the visit. Some guys sat on a metal chain and broke it. -_-”

Anyway, after I got the invitation, I was pretty excited because this wasn’t going to be a normal Night Safari visit, but it includes The Return of Halloween Horrors. ๐Ÿ˜€

Every wondered where the dead fairytale characters go? They go to the Night Safari this month! ๐Ÿ˜€

Before we entered the Night Safari, we could hear lots of screams and laughter and wondered what was going on.

Charmelon spotted this:

This person was standing at the shadows. If Charmelon didn’t point her out to me, I wouldn’t have seen her at all. Creepy.

Oh. How did I know the seller’s a female?

There was Pinocchio! And Dracula, who roared at me after I said “thank you!” I guess it was his way of saying “Your welcome!”

Notice how they have different poses? ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll let the pictures do the talking ๐Ÿ˜€

(At the reception area)

Melon and Aladin.

Tin man! Melon and my favourite character for the day. He doesn’t really scares people, but follows you around in a friendly way.

This pic didn’t show it, but his heart came out of his body so he died. ๐Ÿ™ Poor thing.

Cinderella had the glass slipper thrown on her head. Instant death.
My expression was supposed to be sombre -_-” I look weird.

Hunchback of Notre Dame (with Melon).

Joker? From the cards?
He scared Melon…

… I tried to scare him back.

Back for vengeance…

Head for sale…

the “black widow”? I have no idea but I think she’s pretty and resembles Angela Chang ๐Ÿ˜›

Oh and this jack-o-lantern display that they did was amazing! It’ll “stand up” and roar at people at different intervals. Love it!
I have a thing for jack-o-lanterns by the way. =/ No idea why!

Went on board the Train of Terror.

The first part was the normal tram ride that you get. It takes you through the usual tram path. However, the tram guide was speaking in a way that was supposed to scare us. She included lots of “Hahahahaha” in there (think: evil laughter) but it just got annoying at some point and we all were like “wah lau!!” >.< Oh and the dead will jump on your tram and grab you so be careful! ๐Ÿ˜› My fellow tram passengers were pretty fun to be with by the way. ๐Ÿ™‚ Read on to find out why.

Beast! Did Beauty kill him?

I think someone wanted her number? Then she screamed and followed the tram and he said “Ok ok sorry sorry!”

Didn’t manage to take all of the “dead”. They came pretty fast! One wolf-man even jumped in front of me, and someone behind shouted, “Relax, relax!”

After the tram ride, we decided to go on the…

What’s that??

Mangled body eh?

Jack-O-Lantern! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s looking at you!

It had no legs.

I didn’t realise there was someone there at first.

haha kidding. He didn’t say that. He just roared at me so I roared back.

Poor guy who died of thirst while outfield. He’s fused with the bushes already. I offered him water and he stretched out his arm for it. Then I told him it was from my water bottle he gave a sian look and went back to his place. ๐Ÿ™

Charmelon almost ran away when he jumped out of the bushes about 1 second after I told her there was someone there. ๐Ÿ˜› Melon’s so cute la! ๐Ÿ™‚

Arms for sale…

Chinese vampire! He glows by the way. Look at my shirt glow too!

The last stage… If nothing jumps out at you over here…

Of course, your ticket entitles you to walk around the Night Safari which Melon and I did. Saw lots of animals other than those on the tram.

Like these mousedeers. ๐Ÿ˜€

See, we were scared till we’re sweating like that!

Had a great time!

Adult ticket (with Train of Terror ride): $35
Child ticket (with Train of Terror ride): $18
Adult ticket (admission only): $22
Child ticket (admission only): $11

Thanks to and Night Safari!

Fire at NUS Canteen today

Attempts to take a picture of the stall. Look at the smoke.

There was a fire at Biz Canteen (The Terrace) during lunch today.

But can you believe it? All the smoke and the hints of fire in the Arab stall and there were still people queuing for the Arab food?

And they say NUS people are smart =x

The fire wasn’t too big, so they sort of put it out real quickly and the Arab stall was closed for the day.

*Note: I wasn’t the only one commenting about their stupidity. You should hear people wondering out loud why those people were still queuing in front of the stall.

Code XtremeApps Prize Presentation

Woke up early this morning to attend Code Xtreme Apps Prize Presentation. I didn’t plan to go for it coz I didn’t feel like watching others receive their awards on stage (yea, I’m not a good sport at times =X That’s why I don’t go for speech days unless it’s because I’m receiving an award) and listening to talks (ok was joking about the former part of the sentence. lol). But Mr Gary Lim (henceforth known as Gary) sent us an email telling us that Melissa‘s team, BAM2 will be there to receive a Merit award for their work on the prize presentation day so I decided to go and cheer for them, plus see what the winning team offered. I’d missed the RSVP date, but as Gary had reserved seats for all of us from NYP, I was able to register my name in at the last minute.

Met Hwa Swee, Olive, Edison, Scott, Ken, Karen, Chuan Lim and some people who I recognise by face in school on the way there. Yi Long and his uncle (who’d fetched him there) was there already by the time we reached.

They had the prize presentation first (Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan was the VIP) and then the seminar. The seminar wasn’t bad except that it wasn’t of my forte so I had no idea what was going on. =X And then a tea break where we had some food.

The prize winners (2 teams won 3rd prize but one team was unable to attend) showcased their work during the tea break. Honestly, I have to say what they’d done was quite good given the time limit of 24 hours. I don’t think I shall comment much about the applications (lest readers might think I’m jealous or something ๐Ÿ˜› ), but congratulations to all the winning teams! ๐Ÿ™‚

Went for lunch with everyone else and Gary at Ramen Ten. Had Oyaku Chicken Noodles. Not that bad. Enjoyed the soup and the handmade noodles, but I think I like Ajisen’s noodles better.

Code XtremeApps competition.

I reached Dhoby Ghaut at 9.05am because Teck Hwee said to meet the day before at 9.15am. As expected, I was the earliest, and Hwa Swee arrived about 10 minutes later.

We went to Starbucks and got a drink (Vanilla Latte for me), sat there and talked about what’s going to happen next semester in school. :S Yan Qin, Yi Long, Tom, Vijay, Harish and Teck Hwee arrived and we all walked to SMU SIS building.

Met Li ying outside the building. She forgot her laptop adapter and we waited till about 10.30am before heading up to register for the Code Xtreme Apps competition.

Upon receiving our package, we immediately took everything out and looked through it. The theme of the competition was similar to what we’d guessed it would be, and hence went on to discuss what we could do with the theme. We also realised that our group’s room number was invalid and went on to clarify with the NUS professor what it should be. Haha.

The competition started right after lunch. LY, YL and I realised that we were sitting in front of Vijay’s team until they got reallocated to another room. THEN, about 30 minutes into the competition, the “helper” told us to move to another room. -_-” We’d already settled down into our places and started coding already! Was super annoyed and irritated by that, but nevermind. At least the seats we were allocated to in the other room was more spacious. And the room we were allocated to was the same as Vijay’s team and Nicole’s team. ๐Ÿ™‚

Encountered loads of problems thoughout the competition as YL and I haven’t coded in Java for almost half a year (and what we’d coded 6 months ago were mapplets). So poor LY had to help us. I tried not to build onto her stress level by looking at the Java and Google GWT APIs. One of the functions that I was supposed to do couldn’t work out in the end and ended up working on another function.

Time flew by very quickly. By the time of submission, even though we weren’t able to complete all our functions, at least the important ones were done. We encountered deployment problems. I’m guessing the reason for it would most likely be the fact that the project wasn’t created properly at the beginning. >.< Oh well. Luckily for us, the organisers allowed us to submit our files in a normal folder. ๐Ÿ™‚ We were the last team to get judged. Comments from the judges were that what we did was interactive and different from others. They tried to get us to "sell" our project, but due to the lack of sleep, we failed that part. Lol. But was quite alright in the end. So well, the weekend was fruitful as I got to learn a lot more about Google WTK as compared to the stuff that I'd read up at home about it. Learnt a lot about using Eclipse as well (though I still am not used to using it). Though I felt that perhaps this competition should be divided into categories. Even though Ruby on Rails, Google Maps, Google Mashup and GWT are new technology, there are many professionals or people out there who are already well-versed at it. A lot of us are newbies to these technology and we would definitely not win or cannot even compare to their standard in a competition like this. Even though the organisers emphasized that it is the idea that is important in this competition, it is afterall a programming competition. Maybe by having different categories in this competition, the top few of each category could have a second round of judging and the best would be able to win the Google trip or something? Just my 2 cents worth on this. ๐Ÿ™‚

My Story: Swimming.

When I was 7 or 8, I went for swimming lessons every Saturday afternoons at the neighbourhood swimming complex.

When I first started learning, I remember going for lessons with my mum’s friend’s son who’s one year older than me, share the same religion and we studied at the same primary school.

He was like a big brother to me and after swimming lessons, my sis, mum and I would sometimes go to his house and play computer games. There was this hotel game where you build a hotel and manage it – very similar to the Roller Coaster Tycoon / Zoo Tycoon series of games. He taught my sis and I how to play it and all 3 of us would always have fun.

After a few months, he stopped these swimming lessons. I continued these lessons. I’d only see him in school. But we wouldn’t talk at all.

Well, life’s like that, you stop talking to people, you grow up, and you aren’t friends anymore.

I’d often see him at some SSA events and all, but unfortunately, except for that few seconds of staring that shows recognition, I didn’t get to talk to him at all.

I also saw him at the last IT fair (where I got my Samsung YP-T9) working and he did a double-take when he saw me. I wondered why.

So yesterday, I found his blog and then friendster and I must say, I’m glad that he’s doing well in photography.

Anyway, I’d blogged about this because of the many friends that I had when I were young, and he’s like the only one who I treated as a big brother. And when I was a kid, you feel cool when you have an older friend around. Maybe one day we will be friends again and he can share his photography tips with me. ๐Ÿ™‚

“You don’t love a woman because she is beautiful, she is beautiful because you love her”.

Found the above quote really really beautiful from my iGoogle’s “Love Quote of The Day”.

So basically slacked the whole day today, and downloaded a few ROMs to play. Anyone knows where to get Super Mario Bros ROM? The original old school one in the Mushroom World? Oh, and 2 more people have joined me for Neopets. ๐Ÿ™‚

Using Safari now. Really beautiful!!

Just now Huzz shared this website: and it was spread to almost the whole group of us. Laughed till tears flowed out of my eyes. Literally. It was that funny. ๐Ÿ˜€

Go ahead and add your blog url in. Just some warning though: the words that are “translated” might offend people and all so just take it with a pinch of salt. ๐Ÿ™‚

Watched Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End yesterday with Huzz, Jia Hui, Mike, Yi Long, Henry, Hwa Swee and Edmund at this place called Fortune Mall. We went to the wrong place coz the driver wasn’t too sure where the place was. Just wished that the instructions were clearer. :-/ But that place is quite nice. ๐Ÿ™‚ Walked around before watching Pirates at around 9. Not a bad place honestly. Quite similar to SG’s. And oh, I saw a small ad thingy on “I Not Stupid”, except that the name is different. Quite interesting lah.

POTC3… A bit disappointing coz they kept cutting bits of it. >.< We were eagerly awaiting for Chow Yun Fat’s character Sao Feng to say “Welcome to Singapore” but they cut it off!!!! ๐Ÿ™ Sad ah. And his character like died within 20 mins? A bit weird. It made his character a bit redundant. Lol. Maybe coz I was tired, but I liked POTC2 better. Though I’ll still get the DVD/VCD in SG when I return. ๐Ÿ™‚ The bonus scene after the credits was a bit erm, interesting. =X But quite sad though. Will and Elizabeth can only meet each other once every 10 years. ๐Ÿ™

Reached home at 12+ am.

Haagen Dazs tonight! ๐Ÿ˜€
ๅณจ็œ‰ๅฑฑ (E-Mei Shan) and ไนๅฑฑ (Le Shan) tomorrow and sunday. Hope it’ll be fun. Hope that I won’t fall asleep during the trip. :-/

Friendster Photos

Was bored yesterday so for some reason, decided to look at my Friendster photos. When I saw this, I couldn’t help laughing. And I laughed for about 5 minutes straight, till I couldn’t breathe properly, till I had tears in my eyes. ๐Ÿ˜€ hahaha. (Okay I sound evil)

Then I also told the others (buddha, LY and Henry) to take a look at it, and buddha said, “Wah, evolve from Sun Wukong to TPYS!” Lol. TPYS = Tian Peng Yuan Shuai ๅคฉๆฃšๅ…ƒๅธ… = ็Œชๅ…ซๆˆ’ “Pigsy”. Lol. He said more stuff about him having two more “meat” on his face and stuff like not to evolve into something else scary and all. I didn’t really take note, coz I was laughing too hard. ROFLOL. ๐Ÿ˜›

I really wonder why I didn’t notice that change. Lol. Maybe coz we all see each other too often? As in everyone in the class sees each other too often. ๐Ÿ™‚ As always, I’ve changed the most. Compare my sec 1 and sec 4 picture, and also my yr 1 and yr 3 picture. ๐Ÿ™‚ Henry said I’m the one who changed the most hairstyle, which is quite true.

Many things have changed since that picture. 2 of the classmates have already transferred out, and some of us have already changed our hairstyles. It seems that we won’t be having lessons as a class anymore, because of the attachment and all. Oh well.

Since we’re at the topic of my friendster pictures, lets see…

Taken on National Day 2005. I remember this day coz we went to Wild Wild Wet for the first time with Wen Fang (my sis’s friend since kindergarten) and her family, then I got cooked under the sun and got heatstroke :-/ And many people say that we look like each other after looking at this picture ๐Ÿ™‚

Taken after we watched Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire at PS! Everyone looks so young, especially Shamin and Dicky. Now Dickson is taller than me liao ๐Ÿ™ lol

Terence Teow!! I miss the guy! Where is he now? Miss his conducting!! And also Beatriz, Uncle Jack, Swee Teng, Mei Ling… They don’t come back as frequently already. ๐Ÿ™

I like this picture a lot. I like this cat a lot coz it’s very tame, friendly and all. ๐Ÿ™‚

HS Alumni + Mr Lee at NYPSO’s concert. ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t really like this picture coz my mouth’s open -_-” I remember sitting on the steps for this concert, and sms-ing Guangyi throughout, telling him about the pieces the orchestra played (coz they were similar to SNCO’s repetoire) and the violin soloist.

HS ADDICTION! ๐Ÿ˜€ I took this photo from the circle seat area where I was ushering. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mr Jacomo Bairos (SSO Tuba player)!!! I look short in this pic. Why is he so tall?? At BBQ this year. I told him about my attachment in China and he kept calling me “China Girl” for the rest of the day (he doesn’t know my name).

SWE percussion with Tama Goh!! I remember Uncle Jack going, “Come come, take picture with your ๅถๅƒ (idol).” and Tama Goh replied, “ๅ‘•ๅ็š„ๅฏน่ฑก.” (means someone that makes you vomit or something like that) Cool guy. ๐Ÿ™‚

SRJC 1A04. I think this was taken on the day the school celebrated CNY. 4 of us in the end went to NYP. lol

The photo that really makes Twin Vampire and I look like twins (except for the height). ๐Ÿ™‚ My cousin couldn’t even tell which is me. LOL. Ah, how i miss those times when the group of us woke up early/didn’t sleep to be at the airport to receive/send Reuben. ๐Ÿ™‚

Alright, that’s all for now. Got to prepare for EL lessons later! Bye!
