June 2010 Projects: Cousins meetup (outside Grandma’s house)

Sooo… a few months ago, a few of us cousins discussed and decided that we should have a cousins gathering/outing outside of Grandma’s house. The main reason being, we usually meetup only at grandma’s and we don’t really communicate much. I actually have a dream that the 20+ of us could come to one outing and take a group picture. It would really mean a lot to have that photo somewhere. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be one at the moment. ๐Ÿ™

This holidays, I was supposed to visit Janning at KL, but the plan was cancelled in the end, and about a month ago, Janning emailed me to tell me that she’s coming to SG! ๐Ÿ˜€ What a surprise! So we discussed for a few nights on MSN where I could bring her to (for half a day) and she suggested we could have a mini cousins gathering. I mass FB-messaged my cousins, but not many replied unfortunately. ๐Ÿ™ We just gathered a few then, and after that set a day and place to meet.

Anyway, I got sick a few days before Janning came, but managed to recover on time. ๐Ÿ™‚

On the 19th June, Uncle Alex drove Janning over to my house to pick me up and we headed to Khatib. As Janning was hungry, we went to a coffee shop at Khatib and Janning had her lunch while I had tea.

Sooo… Here are a few of the pics I took at Bottle Tree Park (which was our first stop for the day).

There was some fishing competition and this guy caught that fish. Pretty big, but they put it back after the photo.

Next stop was Marina Barrage! Okay we went to eat at this coffee shop next to Northpoint and surprisingly the bak chor mee was pretty good! Then we went to Marina Barrage.

We chatted along the way and I got to know Janning better. Haha. We’re both cousins but even though she’s from KL, I feel I’m also not that close with cousins from SG what say KL? I’m glad I got to talk to her and know her better. ๐Ÿ™‚

It was dark when we arrived. I’d planned Marina Barrage as the “night event” because I felt that there would be more stuff there to see instead of Bottle Tree Park.

To be honest I didn’t know what I would see there, and wow! I didn’t realise that there would be soooo many people around as well as things happening!

Kite flying at night. Blur coz slow shutter speed and strong winds…

Basically, we walked around taking pictures of people and the view. It just so happened that there was NDP rehearsal and there were fireworks! But sad to say, I lack a tripod and the skills to take proper pictures of it.

UFO flying above Singapore Flyer??? ๐Ÿ˜›

Look at all the people!

Light from MBS.

Anyway, most of the shots were blurry because of the lack of tripod and slow shutter. Quite bad la. ๐Ÿ™

But it compensated for the above pic. Look closely at the fountains ๐Ÿ˜€

Janning wanted to take the fountain with coloured lights but for some reason she kept missing the chance. So since we had time, we sat there and waited for it. I decided to experiment with bokeh shots. Haha. I’m quite amused by bokeh. Pretty interesting you know? So yea here are some of the shots.

Interesting how not to focus can give you nice art too. What I see when I don’t wear my specs basically. =x

At night.

We’d wanted to go to MBS but unfortunately I was too noob to know where to go. Lol I made us alight at the wrong stop (so paiseh) and the buses there weren’t that frequent so we had to go back or it would be too late.

Janning and I on the train! ๐Ÿ˜€

So that was the first meetup with her! Remember the cousins gathering thingy, it was to be on the 21 June.

We’d asked quite a few cousins, but unfortunately by the actual day itself, it was just Janning, Me, Danny and Wei Wen. Fortunately to be honest. ๐Ÿ™‚ >1 person better than no one right?

Dinner was just Janning, Danny and I. Danny kept wanting to go to this place called “The Creation” at Shaw Centre (opposite Suntec that area) so we went!

I had pasta (can’t remember what) with chamomile tea and soup. Approximately $15. Not bad!

Wei Wen joined us after that and we took a group photo before heading to INK Club Bar.

Danny, Janning, Wei Wen and I. I know I’m the shortest

So we headed to INK! It’s a great place by the way. They had a guest trumpeter that day.

We had a drink each. Only Janning got an alcoholic drink. I was still under medication so didn’t dare. Next time perhaps! Love that place. Love the type of jazz music there. ๐Ÿ™‚

We took another group pic together!

Benny was supposed to go on that day. But he had to OT till late (poor thing), and… he arranged for another meetup with Janning on the 22nd! ๐Ÿ˜€

I brought Huzz along coz he’s almost family (hee hee) and we were supposed to be watching a movie that day. He was okay that we weren’t going for the movie anyways ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks bf!

I reached there quite late because I had to OT a bit as well as the fact that I got off the wrong stop. zzz Huzz and I went to look for Janning, then we headed to Xin Wang HK Cafe at Marina Square for dinner!

Had a good long chat (okay I was mostly observing) with Janning and Benny. Huzz was pretty entertained as well.

Group shots!

*Group pics and pics at INK are courtesy of Janning!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, it was a fufilling 3 days. I got to communicate with cousins Janning, Danny, Wei Wen and Benny. Learnt a lot about them that I didn’t know before. Basically the main reason was the age gap I feel and over the years, we just stopped talking much at Grandma’s and all. Pretty sad. But anyway, I am determined that one day, all of us cousins will be able to meetup like friends do outside of where we usually go to! In fact, I have this dream of having a photo of all of us 20+ cousins together. I will definitely print and frame it up if there comes such a day. I know that my cousins either like photography, or music or do something related to either one (e.g. singing, dancing, playing instrument, art, etc) and I belong to either one as well! I am very sure that we will all be good friends instead of only being related by blood.

Aiming for more of such outings! ๐Ÿ˜€

Despicable Me [Omy.sg Movie Review]

Remember last year when I won a pair of tickets from Shan and Rozz of 987FM to watch a movie with my sister for her birthday?

This year, I got the opportunity thanks to Omy.sg to watch Despcable Me!! And again, I brought Candy to the preview. ๐Ÿ™‚ I immediately signed up when I saw the opportunity so that I am able to bring her again!

When we arrived, The Cathay was super crowded and we realised that this is the very first preview of Despicable Me in SG! Meaning we were one of the first group of people watching it in Singapore! ๐Ÿ˜€ Haha.

There were people handing out stickers, and queuing for photos. And as you’d seen in the first image, my sis and I took one with the minions too (who are probably kids judging from their height).

I didn’t know what the movie was about actually, except that this guy (Gru) wants to be super evil so he stole some stuff like the statue of liberty (from Vegas lol) and the Times Square screen and now he wants to be the super evil person and steal the moon.

Who is it to stop him right? Right! Except this other evil guy (I shall not say who, go and watch it) and 3 little kids who managed to touch his heart. haha.

I shall not say too much to spoil it but go and watch it. You’ll laugh like mad and GO AND WATCH THE 3D VERSION! I know it may sound like I’m trying to advertise for the movie (this is after all a review) but I believe they made the movie for 3D. Especially some scenes! Shall not spoil it but the experience is just amazing.

Do sit through the credits too (with your 3D glasses). The few small scenes after that that played with the 3D technology is amazing.

I just found this app where you can translate what the minions are saying in the movie! Go download it before you watch it here: http://www.bestbuymoviemode.com/

My favourites are the minions as well as the little girl, Agnes. haha. She’s so cute!

Source: Movie Wallpaper.net

Excellent movie! I gave it 4.5/5 stars because of the humour, fun, great 3D effects and some surprising stuff that happens in it. Lol.

Oh and the soundtrack’s mostly done by Pharrell Williams, who is a popular artiste and worked with people like Justin Timberlake before.

Thank you Omy.sg for the movie! ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyway, Candy was sick before the movie so we couldn’t go for a good dinner! ๐Ÿ™ Another day then.

Leaving you with one more pic of the minion:

What goes around comes around.

Isn’t it interesting how many people/things go around in a big circle back at you?

Good things or bad things they all do the same. ๐Ÿ™‚

Don’t know why but I suddenly felt like writing about this.

I remember back in 2007/2008 I was watching this ๆ ก่Šฑๆ ก่‰ program on Channel 8. It was at TP where Fiona Xie asked this guy if he could play any instrument and he said drums. Then he did a bit of air drums and I was thinking “Eh, that’s just basic only!” Haha. Oops. Anyway, a few years later, Pin Wen joined SNCO and I found out that he was actually that guy. haha.

Another example was that I remember back in Pri 1-3 when I had a classmate who was super smart and he never talked when the teacher was teaching. He switched to another school in Primary 4 and I never heard of him again – until a few months ago when I saw a guy that looked familiar at an NUSSD Daimokukai who really turned out to be Jia Xin. Hahhaa.

Interesting!

A picture of me.

Have been hard at work studying!

I think I have more pictures of others in OPP than myself. haha.

Anyway, I haven’t blogged about this picture before right?

This was taken by Jasmine Teh last year 23 May 2009 when I went out with Huzz on a group outing with some other OPP (Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai) friends.

I think it’s one of the nicest picture of me. Haha.

One sad thing is that I don’t have many nice pictures of myself (other than those camwhored) but good thing about having a dslr is that I can take nice pictures of others!

I’ve been uploading random pictures on Facebook, Flickr and my Tumblr account so do take a look at them!

Here are the nicer ones that I took (using 90). ๐Ÿ™‚

Do comment on them okie?

Yet another pathway

My sis cooked this. Herbed Dory Fish. Yummy.

I got this from this month’s NUSSD meeting. It’s stuck on my board now btw.

I wonder who wrote it.

Cheese omelette from Jamie Oliver’s Youtube lesson. Haha.

I added herb in it.

Sushi mum bought today.

She made me take this lol. She said if she had a camera and skills like me (what skills?) she’ll take pictures of all food.

And this too.

Need to practice on my aperture.
I was reading this book on photography and the author was saying that he likes f/2.8 when taking portraits. I checked my lens and realised that the largest aperture I have is f/3.5. Argh sad.

But I’m planning on getting a 50mm f/1.8 soon! ๐Ÿ˜€ Soon. lol

Yesterday went for NUSSD Daimokukai. Left with Shirley. So cool Shirley’s sister was my NYPSD contact ic and she’s now my contact ic.

Bad or good friday?

Yesterday was Good Friday. I went to school for a 7 hour long project meeting despite the fact that I can sleep in because there wasn’t any drilling from the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP). Ahh.

I thought it wasn’t bad. Then I had no choice but to eat Mac in school thereby breaking my 2 years of strike from Mac (nothing else was open; here goes another few years of NO MACDONALDs). Then after the meeting it rained HEAVILY.

But strangely, despite all these, when I was standing at the bus stop waiting for the bus and watching the rain, suddenly the SYM scene where young Shin’ichi and young Mineko were together at the kaikan and waiting for the meeting to start (or something) and it was raining.

I then smiled and I have to admit that a bit of tears came into my eyes. ๐Ÿ™‚

Met up with Huzz at vivo after that. He’s so tanned from the parade thingy that happened yesterday. But still the same guy!

Anyway, I also recalled the feelings about 3 years ago on Good Friday. I just fell in love (hahaha so weird of me to type this), kept listening to TANK’s songs non-stop whole day, was about to go to Chengdu for 4 months, was in a confused state of mind as something interesting happened the day before at Harry’s Bar at the Esplanade where my group of friends played truth or dare and we drank.

It was the first time Huzz talked to me face-to-face too. ๐Ÿ™‚

See I remembered. ๐Ÿ™‚

And now here we are, 3 years on (almost 3 years in a r/s) and let’s go on for the many many many years to come!

I will always remember. ๐Ÿ™‚

—————————————-
Oh yea, Candy got the SSA Cultural medalion award thingy! PROUD OF HER! Not everyone can get it! So cool la. I remembered the time when Terence Teow got the award, and also Tamagoh and Nestor Torres! So wonderful to have such an honour for someone in the family to have it ๐Ÿ˜€

SD Kenshu 2010 (30-31 Jan).

NUSSD on the 2nd day of kenshu

Meant to blog this last week but I was just too busy! Life has been interesting lately.

Kenshu, or ็ ”ไฟฎ basically means training in Bahasa Japanese (hahaha). Every year I believe SD has a kenshu for all members and friends to participate and learn.

So this year, I agreed to go for kenshu but didn’t take the exam. Basically, throughout the lessons, I was OT-ing. I went for the first lesson (learnt about SSA’s SD history for that one) and the subsequent ones I couldn’t make it.

So on the morning of the first day, I was feeling a little freaked out as I didn’t really know what to bring and pack. After packing, I realised that I had to bring a lot of stuff and was wondering why (it was a 2D 1N thing). Haha.

Then, on my way there, my shirt had this string that decided to unroll from nowhere. I had to break the string using my hands on the train and it looked pretty awful. All these bad demons attacking me huh?

By the time I reached CCK LRT (the kenshu was at Senja Soka Centre) I was freaking out, wondering if my outfit was ok as they said we have to wear at least 3/4 pants. I was wearing a pants that reached my knees.

Regress a bit, I know I’m a bit paranoid but I’m scared not knowing what the 2 days was going to be like. I think I’m kinda weird in some way. Wonder if there’s a syndrome for it. If I don’t know the schedule for a meeting or stuff, I’ll just freak out. My day has to be planned out if I’m out with others. Only with family and myself then I won’t be scared.

So I reached there and was greeted by Evelyn who handed me my SD T-shirt (after I paid) and the booklet for Kenshu. Saw Wang Lee as well. Evelyn then brought me upstairs and looked for Jingsi who I knew from NYPSD. She couldn’t recognize me at first until she stared at me for 1 second. haha. She was like “I recognise you from your eyes!” ๐Ÿ˜€ I have big eyes. Lol.

We started updating on what we were doing and all, and Evelyn brought a girl, Jia Neng and joined us. Jia Neng’s major is Medicine. When she told us, we were like “Whoa!!” and she looked a bit paiseh. haha. She’s nice and end for the next 2 days I hung out with her.

I realised that there were some people whom I’d never seen in any of the NUSSD meetings (Jia Neng included) and they told me that they seldom attended. But I’m quite glad that they came for kenshu!

For the 2 days, we had sharings, study, testimonials, games and an 80 sec to fame thing.

Which reminds me. I saw Boon Han and he didn’t recognise me at all. He even asked if I’m “Candy or Jasmine”. Was totally annoyed then but not now. My sis told me, “Well done, your friend of so many years don’t recognise you.” Haha

Didn’t really sleep well at night coz it was pretty noisy and people kept walking in and out of the room. Plus, the door hinge was super squeeky and it just wake me up everytime. NUSSD was placed near the door btw. Shirley (Lam) was pretty funny. She lay down on the floor and was like “Huh!! The floor is so hard!!” then she covered her head using her sleeping bag and said “Wah my sleeping bag is smelly!!” Lol.

Had loads of fun at the morning exercise thingy at the 2nd day. There was this lady who taught us some aerobics exercise and the SD guys made lots of sound effects for it. It made the mood more fun and reminded me a lot about YCF 2001! A table where the trainers will stand on top to teach us moves, exercises, and also the mass exercises and loads of people doing the same moves, etc.

The picture above was taken after the exercise and games on the 2nd day.

Oh ya, we had Lee Wee Bros beehoon breakfast on the 2nd day!! I was super excited when I saw the van driving into Senja Soka Centre. HAHA. Love their Otah! And the chilli that came with the beehoon and otah was excellent! It wasn’t too spicy (or maybe it’s me) but it was pretty sweet and complemented the beehoon nicely! ๐Ÿ˜€

Didn’t think of taking pictures throughout the 2 days. ๐Ÿ™ So the above was taken from Qiuyi‘s facebook.

Learnt a lot throughout the camp and I just wondered why I didn’t strive as hard for SSA/SGI/Sensei before. ๐Ÿ™ Must jia you!

7 things people stereotype/generally think about me.

Since yesterday’s MNO class, I’ve been thinking of doing this entry. The class had a discussion about how in general, students sitting at the back of the classroom are usually introverts and wouldn’t participate in discussions (I was sitting at the back of the classroom -.-).

Ever since entering NUS, for some reason or another, or maybe because NUS is a super international university, I get several questions asking about me, which I found out from my friends, is because of my looks, dressings, accessories, etc.

So here they are:

7. Because I wear pants/jeans most of the time to school (vs wearing skirt/shorts), I am not Singaporean.
I really don’t understand this logic. Why can’t I wear pants/jeans because it’s cold?

6. Because of my looks, I’m mixed blood.

Kinda love this one.
Missed out the number of times at which people asked me where I’m from. Haha.
Once, when I was with my mum and she met a friend outside. Her friend saw me and asked my mum if my dad was Caucasian. Haha. And a few times, there were random people who asked me if I’m from the Philippines, Vietnam or Malaysia.

The best one was that my secondary school friend once confessed that because of my good command of English (then :P) they thought I’d stayed in Britain for a few years before.

This one I understand but…

5. Because I carry a backpack, I am not Singaporean.
This one I seriously don’t understand. Thankyouverymuch.

4. Because I don’t wear/use branded clothes/shoes/accessories, I am not Singaporean.
I personally think Converse is a brand and so is Esprit. I admit I am not materialistic and those items were bought at a discount, PLUS plus plus, as compared to stuff like LV, Prada, those aren’t considered as branded (who cares seriously?)

Worst is that they usually ask me if I’m from Country A. It’s not only annoying me, but kind of insulting the country’s people leh. My pov that is.

I consider this as a compliment, but I still don’t like how people over generalise things.

3. Because I’m from School of Computing/School of IT, I know everything about computers, hardware, software IT…
Sad to say, I’m not good at everything relating to IT. Despite the fact that I love reading about IT or computer related stuff, but I don’t really know everything about it. Don’t ask me about encodings. I have limited knowledge about it. Don’t ask me what type of RAM is good. I don’t really know much. Don’t ask me what graphics card I’m using. I don’t remember.

2. Because (of some reason or another), I wear make-up.
Nope, I don’t wear make-up. Because I don’t really feel the need to put on make-up. And I fear that it’ll ruin my skin. So I drink plenty of water and don’t put make up.

Once, a colleague commented on my face and asked if I’d put powder or make-up and was stunned that I didn’t. ๐Ÿ™‚

1. Because my bf is of Indonesian-Chinese heritage, I learn Bahasa Indonesia to communicate with him.
Wrong! Haha. My bf doesn’t speak much Bahasa (though he can understand a bit like 10%).

Actually, I learnt it coz it sounded quite nice when I heard his parents and relatives speak Bahasa. Plus I realised that many of my friends are of Indonesian heritage and hence thought it’ll be cool to learn it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The past

Found something off a tumblr blog. It’s a quote from Grey’s Anatomy

“Sometimes the past is something you just canโ€™t let go of. And sometimes the past is something weโ€™ll do anything to forget. And sometimes we learn something new about the past that changes everything we know about the present.”

Hmm…

Pengalaman Proyek tentang Bahasa Indonesia 2

My Bahasa Indonesia 2 module officially ended today at 3.45pm with the last test of the semester. I think I did badly, but let’s hope I pass. We had our project presentation about 2 weeks ago and we had to write an essay titled “Pengalaman Proyek” (Project Experience). Here’s what I wrote (corrected by Ibu Fanny). Apologies to those who can’t understand the following…

Tulisan banyak perubahan.

Hari presentasi, teman saya Kartika ikut saya ke โ€œSeminar Roomโ€. Selama presentasi, saya nervus sekali. Untungnya, presentasi tidak ada kesalahan. Kartika berkata, โ€œSaya sangat menikmati acaranya.โ€

Sebelum presentasi, kepala saya pusing sekali.

Kartika pulang sesudah presentasi.

Saya sangat menikmati proyeknya.

Cheryl’s 21st Party.

Went to Cheryl’s 21st Birthday party today (31 Oct). Her birthday’s actually on 5 November (same as Huzz) but she decided to celebrate earlier.

Wanted to borrow a DSLR to take pictures (must build portfolio okay) but unfortunately the T&Cs changed so I wasn’t qualified by their terms to borrow.

Anyway, tried the Nikon D90 that Cheryl’s friend was using.

Huzz and I were the earliest guests to come I guess. We were there talking to each other, a little to Zixuan and Cheryl and was entertained by her neighbour’s dog. haha.

I took this shot. Not very sharp, I know =/

We were one of the first to eat the buffet and also durians that Cheryl’s dad opened for us. Yummy!

Afterwards, Scott and Edison came and we all sat at a table and talked, about school and about NS. Also played this card game where we had to shoot ducks. Forgot the game title.

It began to rain around that time and the cards kept flying off the table, so we ended the game after Henry arrived. Wah haven’t seen him in a really long time!

More chatting, and then cake cutting time!

See how happy Cheryl looks?

Enjoyed my time there ๐Ÿ™‚ Boyfriend was there, good friends there, how not to enjoy? ๐Ÿ™‚

*Photos courtesy of Cheryl’s photographer, Edwin.

——————————————–
Afterwards, the group of us walked to Clementi MRT station. Huzz went back to Jurong, Edison back to NTU, Scott was taking the NEL (which I refused to take after taking it too frequently) and Henry and I took the NS line.

I realised that I’d met 3 of my good friends/buddy/pal from primary school, secondary school and poly within the 2 weeks. haha. This just made my week less stressful.
